A thick, knotted wooden branch rests inside a geometric glass nodule resembling a crystaline insect pupa. Trapped within the bulbous form, the naturalistic sculpture is the work of Austrian glass artist Thomas Medicus. The artist often finds ways to manipulate natural phenomenons to fit inside the framework of shapely glass. His other glassworks, such as a suspended forest tableau resembling a stained glass amoeba, represents the reworking of a natural organism.
His piece titled Crystalis, a portmanteau combining crystal and chrysalis, is created with driftwood and triangulated glass, mimicking dramatic architecture design. Developed through digital modeling and ample scanning, Medicus' end product becomes a materialized sculpture of wood and glass.
In a description of the project, the artist explains his original thinking: “The art pieces are inspired by the idea of creating a digitally designed chrysalis that occupies natural habitats. During the last month, I dealt a lot with resin encapsulations, since it is such an interesting way to separate something from the outside world. I think encapsulation points to a fundamental artistic concept: The viewer usually looks at an art piece from the “outside” without actually connecting to it materialistically. Nevertheless, art is something that can only occur between viewer and art piece.”
“Transparent encapsulation, in a way,” Medicus continues, “emphasises this gap between looking at something from the outside, while mentally being able to ‘be’ inside.”
